It is very rare for Banks to admit cases of fraud and online theft that occur to them, but two weeks ago Orient bank Uganda sent out a message to its clients informing them of an upcoming systems upgrade that would leave them unbanked for the whole weekend.
However what was supposed to be a one-weekend thing has turned into a 2-week nightmare for the Bank’s clients.
The Bank’s ATM machines were changed but the new ones are rejecting Orient ATM cards, the Bank seems to have ended its Partnership with inter-switch in the same two weeks. And all its online payment systems are off (Point of sale)
A clueless Orient Bank client relationships Manager could only say she doesn’t know when systems will be back on and refused to tell this reporter what is going on.
However, sources within the Bank say in the process of upgrading its systems, the bank ‘may’ have been hacked by unknown people trying to take advantage of that moment of weakness when systems are being upgraded.
Update: We managed to talk to the Bank who denied there were any cases of fraud at the Bank and insisted that it was only a few Banking hours on Saturday when the Bank systems went off due to a power shutdown.
