The minister of information, communication and technology Mr. Frank Tumwebaze said that details of over 4000000 sim cards submitted by subscribers cannot be merged with the provided national identification numbers and names.
Tumwebaze said this while appearing before the parliamentary joint committee chaired by Tororo North Woman MP Annet Nyakecho yesterday .In his submission, Tumwebaze said that out of the 160921861 sim card details submitted by MTN which is the biggest Uganda’s leading telecom operators, 15982381 were verified with only 13.4M found to be matching with the names .
Tumwebaze however noted that 2.5 million MTN sim card registration details cannot match with the names indicated on them .Explaining why some sim cards could not be verified even after the provision of the national identification numbers, Tumwebaze attributed this to mistakes carried in writings names while registering and also that Ugandans are not serious when it comes to things like registering for National IDs.
“of course there are reasons why some numbers could not be found and may be some people typed in wrong numbers and submitted in but all in all there was a tremendous response from the public interm of registration” Tumwebaze concluded.
