The Lions Club of Kampala Central will be having its 5th annual marathon this Sunday the 22nd of October 2017 at the Makerere Grounds.

The Lions Club of Kampala Central is a member of the international association of Lions Clubs, and one of the Lions Clubs in Uganda involved in the service to the less fortunate people within our communities in Uganda.

The marathon held last year on October 16th raised awareness and funds which were used for a medical camp held on the 25th of MARCH 2017, in Lira District. The Lions Club of Kampala Central served and performed 100 free cataract surgeries and more than 1500 free eye screening accompanied with issuing of free corrective glasses.

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness. It can only be treated through surgery, which is also expensive. Lions have been at the forefront of fighting preventable blindness having been challenged by Hellen Keller in 1925 to be the “Knights of the blind”.

Over the last ten years, the Lions Club of Kampala Central has restored sight for over 10,000 people through cataract operations and provision of eyeglasses and contact lenses.

This year, five cataract surgery camps have been planned to provide free cataract surgery to people blinded by cataracts in five regions of Uganda. Five sight screening camps are planned for schoolgoing children to screen and detect visual impairment early. A total of 1,000 cataracts shall be operated at a rate of 60$.

This expected to cost up to Ugshs 150,000,000 (Uganda Shillings One Hundred and Fifty Million). The club welcomes the general public and all well-wishers to the marathon this Sunday 22nd October at Makerere Grounds as we Run for Sight and raise funds for this noble cause.

Registration fee is just 20,000/= ugx for adults and 10,000/= ugx for students. This event is organized by the Lions Club of Kampala Central and sponsored by Kingdom Rice.
