Every morning in Kampala, we wake up to the news of a new Gold dealer who is now the new money in town, they stand drinks for people and then 5 years down the road they disappear.
Those who have been around for a long time have always been left wondering where these people come from and how they make their money. Tycoon Wavamuno whose Business empire has been on the Backfoot is one of those.
Appearing on Radio Simba 97.3 FM on Friday 3 March 2017, Gordon Wavamuno said ‘‘These people own houses that are far better than the Statehouse or the President’s house. Where do they get the money?
He wondered, he also tried his best to wonder why he has not gotten the things the new rich have yet he has been working for the last 54 years.
‘‘I have worked for 54 years, I own a number of businesses in Uganda, and However I don’t own Kampala. However, you find young Ugandans who have not worked for even five years, owning in excess. Unfortunately, they don’t tell us their source of money-What is the source of this money?’’
He wants URA to investigate the nouveau rich and find out their source of money and find out if they are paying their taxes.
He added: if they are not paying taxes, the government should attach their properties.
He wondered whether some tycoons are really paying the taxes, something which has affected the economy. He reasoned that if everyone was paying the taxes in full, URA would be collecting enough taxes, and pay better salaries to our critical personnel including teachers and medical personnel among others.
